Overview of Services
When a veteran contacts their MFS liaison, the liaison will collect some basic information so that they can find the treatment program that is best prepared to meet the veteran’s needs.
The MFS liaison’s services may include arranging for the collection of any documentation that is required for admission, coordinating directly with the veteran’s insurance company, and providing whatever additional support is necessary to secure the veteran’s admission to treatment.
The MFS liaison will remain in contact with the facility throughout the veteran’s time in treatment and may also participate in the discharge planning process.
Every step of the way, the MFS liaison will be a source of information, guidance, and support for the veteran and their family.
Types of Disorders
Untreated mental and behavioral health disorders can undermine a veteran’s efforts to make a successful transition to a civilian lifestyle. Our team serves veterans who have been suffering from concerns such as:
- Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Complex trauma
- Combat trauma
- Sexual trauma
- Moral injury
- Substance use and addiction
- Dual diagnosis
The MFS team can also locate ideal treatment providers for veterans who have been living with mental health concerns related to traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Please note that this is not a comprehensive list of all the disorders veterans can find treatment for through the MFS program. To learn how the MFS team can help you, please contact the military liaison in your area.
Levels of Care
One of the many benefits of contacting the MFS team is that our military liaisons can help identify which level or levels of care may be necessary for a veteran to achieve improved health.
Depending on a wide range of personal factors, our team may recommend treatment programs that offer the following levels of care:
- Inpatient care
- Residential treatment
- Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs)
- Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs)
- Traditional outpatient services
Many of the facilities within the MFS referral network offer a dedicated treatment milieu for military members and veterans, have staff members who have prior military service, and follow VA formulary and diagnosis protocols.
If necessary, MFS liaisons can coordinate among multiple providers to ensure a seamless continuum of care.
Therapy Options
The MFS team understands the value of comprehensive treatment to help veterans who have been struggling with mental health disorders and behavioral health concerns.
The MFS team refers to facilities that offer evidence-based curriculums, readiness-oriented approaches to treatment, and therapeutic modalities such as:
- Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
- Cognitive processing therapy (CPT)
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
- Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)
Depending on the full scope of a veteran’s needs, their MFS liaison may refer them to a facility that offers medication management services; individual, group, and family therapies; and experiential therapies such as:
- Virtual reality therapy
- Animal-assisted therapy
- Equine therapy
- Yoga
Veterans who have been struggling with substance use and addiction may be referred to treatment facilities that offer medical detoxification, 12-Step education and support, and the SMART Recovery program.
Insurance Information
The MFS referral network includes trusted and vetted treatment centers within the VA Community Care Network (including both Optum and TriWest Alliance). We also refer to programs that accept TRICARE, Medicare, and many commercial insurance policies. Our military liaisons consider each veteran’s insurance status when they are researching treatment options for them.
Please do not allow financial concerns to prevent you from contacting the MFS liaison in your area. Our team has considerable experience working with all types of insurance providers, and we can find solutions that fit your treatment needs, geographic preferences, and financial circumstances.
